Cherrywood

Next up in my Austin Neighborhood mini series is the Cherrywood neighborhood located in East Central Austin. Cherrywood is just east of The University of Texas campus & downtown and just southwest of Mueller & Windsor Park. It’s an established community that blends urban conveniences and tree-lined streets full of bungalow and craftsman style homes.

Neighborhood History

Cherrywood was established in the 1920s, and over the years, it has grown and evolved into a thriving community that's home to a diverse group of residents. The neighborhood is named after the cherry orchards that once grew in the area. Many of the homes in the neighborhood were built in the bungalow and craftsman styles that were popular during the early 20th century.

As with older neighborhoods, some homes have fallen into disrepair, but a majority have been maintained or lovingly renovated.

Parks & Green Spaces

Cherrywood is home to some beautiful parks & green spaces, including the Cherrywood Pocket Park, Willowbrook Reach & Patterson Park—which offers an outdoor area with picnic tables, basketball & tennis courts, playground & skate park.

Shopping, Dining & Events

Cherrywood has a variety of shopping and dining options near by, making it easy to find everything you need close to home. The Hancock Center is conveniently located near by and provides a selection of restaurants, salons, stores & more. The Mueller Market District is also just a short drive away, and includes a variety of retailers, including H-E-B, Total Wine, PetSmart & Home Depot, as well as several local restaurants and fast food options.

I think Cherrywood has the highest concentration of my favorite local restaurants—I have a lot of favorites around town, but this neighborhood has several that are on that list! It’s home to Cherrywood Coffee House (be sure to try the Luna Taco), Patrizi’s (try everything and always add a meatball), Vic & Al’s (go for the food, stay for the cocktails), Bird Bird Biscuit, Dai Due, Salty Sow, El Chilito, Love Supreme, Mi Madre’s and more. I could keep going. Just drive down Manor and pick a place—you won’t be disappointed. The only place I haven’t tried on Manor Road yet is Este, and that’s just because you need a reservation most nights. Hoping to correct that soon!

And, if you’re reading this list of restaurants and thinking that some fall on the Chestnut side of Manor Rd, I’m well aware of that! I’ll be listing them off when I feature that neighborhood in the future. Both neighborhoods can proudly claim Manor Rd as their own IMO.

Cherrywood is truly an amazing neighborhood to live in with easy access to everything Austin has to offer—especially if you’re a foodie. So whether you're looking for an historic craftsman to renovate and make your own, or a cozy bungalow style home that’s move in ready, Cherrywood has something for everyone.
