Hyde Park

Next up in my Austin Neighborhood mini series is one of the first neighborhoods that comes to mind when people mention Central Austin—Hyde Park! This historical neighborhood is located just north of The University of Texas campus, and directly west of Windsor Park & Mueller. It’s an established community with shady streets lined with Victorian & Craftsman style houses.

Neighborhood History

Hyde Park was established in the 1890s, and is considered by many to be Austin’s first suburb, gaining popularity due to the establishment of an electric streetcar system.

Many of the homes in the neighborhood were built in the Victorian & craftsman styles that were popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Bungalow style homes became more and more prevalent in the 1920s-30s.

Hyde Park offers a range of housing options, from historic homes to modest bungalows, most of which have been updated and renovated over the years.

Parks & Green Spaces

Hyde Park is home to Shipe Park & Pool—a two acre neighborhood park providing sports courts & fields, a wading pool, playground & picnic area.

Another popular green space near Hyde Park is the Hancock Golf Course (open to the public), which features a nine-hole course, driving range & clubhouse, as well as sport courts.

Shopping, Dining & Events

Hyde Park has a variety of shopping & dining options, making it easy to find everything you need close to home. The neighborhood is home to several local restaurants & shops that are worth checking out, including Hyde Park Bar & Grill, Quack’s 43rd Street Bakery, & Antonelli’s Cheese Shop.

In addition to local dining options, Hyde Park is just a short drive away from several shopping centers, including the Triangle (a mixed-use development with apartments, restaurants, shops, and a movie theater), Central Market, the Hancock Center and the Mueller Market District.
